Update on measles outbreak declared on Merseyside

A measles outbreak has been declared on Merseyside. There are 13 confirmed and 16 suspected cases ranging in age from nine months to adults aged in their 20s. Six people, four children and two adults, required treatment in hospital. This compares to just one confirmed case on Merseyside in the first six weeks of 2011 and one in the corresponding period of 2010.

Update on Legionnaires’ Cluster Associated with a Hotel in Spain

10 February 2012, 1400hrs. The Health Protection Agency (HPA) has this week been alerted by the Spanish public health authorities about a further case of Legionnaires’ Disease in a UK resident who stayed at the Diamante Beach Hotel in Calpe, Costa Blanca, as well as two French cases. This brings the total number of UK residents associated with this cluster to 12, with three deaths.

Minor Surgery

Stop Smoking Service

Alcohol Support Service

We are pleased to announce that we have a new alcohol service available to all our patients. This is being delivered in conjunction with Addiction Dependancy Solutions (ADS), the single point of entry into the alcohol treatment service now available in Derby. We are aiming to reduce the harmful effects of alcohol misuse in Derby and will provide a free confidential service for anyone who is over 18 and has a problem with alcohol. Clinics are run by one of our GPs along with our Alcohol Practitioner, Steven Gill, on Wednesday afternoons at Wilson Street Surgery. District Nursing

We have a close liason with the district nursing team who provide care in the community for patients who are housebound or necessitate a home visit, 365 days a year including evening and night service.

District nurses provide care packages to include:

Complex assessment of health needs
Wound assessment and ongoing care
Acute and chronic disease management
Health Promotion
Palliative and terminal care
Promotion and teaching of self care
Administration of treatment using specialised nursing equipment and medication
Promotion of continence and management of incontinence

Midwives

If you are pregnant and would like to see a GP please contact the surgery to book an appointment. To arrange for an appointment to see the Midwife, please telephone the Maternity Support Team on 07554 333 288 and leave a note of your full name and contact details on the answer phone. A Maternity Support Worker will call you back to arrange for a pre-booking session if appropriate. If not, an appointment with the Midwife will be organised.

Health Visitors

The Health Visitors are concerned with health promotion and the prevention of illness, offering help, advice and support on many things affecting the health of both children and adults. The Health Visitors can be contacted by telephone on 01332 888120.

Interpreter Service

If your appointment has been pre-booked by the doctor, nurse or midwife, you must advise a receptionist at the time of making your appointment that you require an interpreter present for your consultation.We do not have interpreters on site so, if you have a language difficulty, you should advise the receptionist that you require a double appointment. Doctors may then choose to use the language line telephone facility available for translation.

Test Results

blood-test-result Please telephone on 01332 332628 between 11am and 3.30pm if you want to know if your test results are back from the Lab.

Whilst Receptionists are unable to advise you of your test results, they can let you know if the results have arrived at the surgery.

When you take your test you will be told how long it will be before the results are returned to the practice.

The minimum time interval before telephoning for results is:

Blood tests 7 working days
X-Rays 14 working days
Cervical Smear test 6 weeks

If a doctor or nurse provides you with a specimen bottle for your use at home, you should return this direct to the London Road Community Hospital or Derby Royal Hospital. We cannot accept any samples required for testing.

Note that the practice has a strict policy regarding confidentiality and data protection and Clinicians will only release test results to the person to whom they relate unless that person has given prior permission for the release of this data or they are not capable of understanding the results.

Sick Note to Fit Note

A new ‘fit note’ been introduced in place of the doctor’s sick note. With your employer’s support, the note will help you return to work sooner by providing more information about the effects of your illness or injury.

Fit note – changes explained

The new fit note will be called the ‘Statement of Fitness for Work’ and will be used in England, Scotland and Wales. It will have more information than the present doctor’s sick note.

The main changes will mean:

your GP will be able to say if they think you are ‘not fit for work’ or ‘may be fit for work’your GP can add advice to the note for your employer on how simple changes to the job you do may allow you to return to work earlier
there will be fewer kinds of medical statements forms issued by GPs
If your GP gives you a note that says that you ‘may be fit for work’ if your employer makes simple changes for you but your employer is unable to make those changes or they do not help you then the fit note will function as if the GP had said that you are ‘not fit for work’ – you will not need to return to the GP to get a new note to cover this situation.
Your GP will put on the fit note whether or not he/she needs to see you again at the end of the period covered by the note. Even if your GP has put that he/she needs to see you again but you have completely recovered and you are back to normal working you do not have to see the GP again about your fit note, although you may, of course, wish to see him/her about other matters. There is no need to get a note to ‘sign back on to work’.
GPs do not issue fit notes for the first seven days of absence caused by illness or an injury and they do not issue return to work notes, even if your employer asks you to get these. If you are having trouble with your employer over these matters you should consult your Union or the ACAS help line on 08457 47 47 47.

How the changes will help employees and employers

Research shows that long periods out of work can lead to worse health while working can be good for your physical and mental health and well-being. The longer you are absent through illness, the lower are the chances of you returning to work. Work may help you recover quicker from illness.

The new fit note is intended for both employees and employers by helping people back to work as soon as possible. Employees will benefit from better health and well-being because they have gone back to work. Employers will be able to keep skilled staff, contributing to the success of the business and reducing sickness absence.

Patients eligible to receive seasonal flu vaccine for winter 2011/12 are the same as for last winter, i.e.

All people aged 65 years or over

All those aged 6 months or over in a clinical risk groups
All pregnant women
People living in long-stay residential care homes or other long-stay care facilities where there is a risk of high morbidity and mortality.

Main carer for an elderly or disabled person
Frontline health and social care workers (HCW) involved in patient care ( Employers must arrange)
