Update on measles outbreak declared on Merseyside

A measles outbreak has been declared on Merseyside. There are 13 confirmed and 16 suspected cases ranging in age from nine months to adults aged in their 20s. Six people, four children and two adults, required treatment in hospital. This compares to just one confirmed case on Merseyside in the first six weeks of 2011 and one in the corresponding period of 2010.

Update on Legionnaires’ Cluster Associated with a Hotel in Spain

10 February 2012, 1400hrs. The Health Protection Agency (HPA) has this week been alerted by the Spanish public health authorities about a further case of Legionnaires’ Disease in a UK resident who stayed at the Diamante Beach Hotel in Calpe, Costa Blanca, as well as two French cases. This brings the total number of UK residents associated with this cluster to 12, with three deaths.

The practice complies with Data Protection and Access to Medical Records legislation. Identifiable information about you will be shared with others in the following circumstances:

To provide further medical treatment for you e.g. from district nurses and hospital services.
To help you get other services e.g. from the social work department. This requires your consent.
When we have a duty to others e.g. in child protection cases anonymised patient information will also be used at local and national level to help the Health Board and Government plan services e.g. for diabetic care.

If you do not wish anonymous information about you to be used in such a way, please let us know.

Reception and administration staff require access to your medical records in order to do their jobs. These members of staff are bound by the same rules of confidentiality as the medical staff.

We make every effort to give the best service possible to everyone who attends our practice.

However, we are aware that things can go wrong resulting in a patient feeling that they have a genuine cause for complaint. If this is so, we would wish for the matter to be settled as quickly, and as amicably, as possible.

To pursue a complaint please contact Sue Altoft, Practice Manager and she will deal with your concerns appropriately. Further written information is available on the complaints procedure from Reception.

We are continually striving to improve our service. Any helpful suggestions would be much appreciated and a suggestion box is located in the waiting area.

Copying Letters to Patients

The NHS has an obligation to involve patients in decisions about their health care. This practice is commited to effective communication.

Providing copy letters is an effective way of keeping patients up to date with their diagnosis and treatment and demonstrates a commitment to good communications and valuing patients.

Our policy is to provide all patients with a copy of their referral letter for their information, if they so wish. Please mention this to your referring GP if you would like a copy of your referral letter

Code of Conduct

What you can expect from the Practice :

To be seen promptly and be treated with respect, in confidence, regardless of your medical problems, age, sex or ethnic origin.
Our Advanced Access system provides you with an appointment to see any one of our doctors, usually on the same day. There are times, however, when the doctor of your choice may be unavailable. In such instances, we will provide you with an alternative doctor.
Wherever possible, you are encouraged to see the same doctor for the same medical complaint to ensure continuity of care.
The practice will not visit you at home in the event of transport difficulties or convenience.
The practice will not tolerate physical or verbal aggression of any kind by patients or their relatives/friends to any members of the practice team.

What the Practice expects from you:

To attend for your appointments on time.
To cancel any appointments you no longer require.
To attend surgery at all times unless you are too unwell to travel.
To treat all members of the practice team with the courtesy and respect you would expect yourself.

Violence Statement & Staff Protection

A zero tolerance policy towards violent, threatening and abusive behaviour is now in place throughout the National Health Service. The doctors, nurses and staff in this practice have the right to do their work in an environment free from violent, threatening or abusive behaviour and everything will be done to protect that right.

At no time will any violent, threatening or abusive behaviour be tolerated in this practice. If you do not respect the rights of our doctors, nurses and staff, we may choose to inform the Police and make arrangements for you to be removed from our medical list.

The practice considers aggressive behaviour to be any personal, abusive and/or aggressive comments, cursing and/or swearing, physical contact and/or aggressive gestures. The practice will request the removal of any patient from the practice list who is aggressive or abusive towards a doctor, member of staff, other patient, or who damages property.

All instances of actual physical abuse on any doctor or member of staff, by a patient or their relatives will be reported to the police as an assault.
